The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, has commended His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal, for approving the establishment of the Zamfara State Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) Board.
The development was formally announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, who explained that the establishment of the Board follows the recent amendment of the State law designed to safeguard the rights of Persons with Disabilities, protect them from discrimination, and ensure equal access to opportunities in all spheres of society.
According to him, key amendments to the law include:
- Substitution of the title Chairman with Executive Chairman;
- Replacement of Executive Secretary with Secretary;
- Conversion of part-time members to full-time members.
Importantly, the amended law makes it mandatory for board members to be Persons with Disabilities, thereby ensuring that its operations directly reflect the needs and aspirations of the disability community.
In a statement issued by his Director of Media and Communications, Mr. Lanre Oloyede, Hon. Abba Isa commended Governor Lawal for aligning himself with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while adding that the governor’s action demonstrates his administration’s strong commitment to social welfare and inclusive development.
The Senior presidential aide further urged other state governors who are yet to domesticate the National Disability Act to do so and establish implementing agencies that will advance disability inclusion at the state level.
Hon. Abba Isa assured that his office remains open to partnerships and ready to provide technical support and guidance to the newly established Zamfara State Board.
The presidential aide also commended Governor Lawal for appointing Alhaji Usman Ahmed Nahuche as the pioneer Executive Chairman of the Board. Alhaji Nahuche, a retired Permanent Secretary from the Zamfara State civil service and a respected member of the Deaf community, brings with him a wealth of experience in governance and advocacy.
Other members appointed to the Board include:
- Hajiya Amina B.M. Audu (Spinal Cord Injuries cluster),
- Tukur Abdullahi (Deaf cluster),
- Babangida Umar Shinkafi (Physically Challenged cluster),
- Umar Babangida Ahmed (Blind cluster),
- Binta Namadi (Representative of Women),
- Sani Abubakar (Member).
The establishment of the Board underscores Governor Lawal’s unwavering dedication to social justice, equity, and inclusivity. It reaffirms his conviction that Persons with Disabilities possess unique talents and potential that can be harnessed for the overall progress and development of Zamfara State.
In charging the appointees to work diligently towards uplifting the living standards of PWDs, Governor Lawal also expressed his gratitude to development partners and stakeholders who supported the amendment process. He assured that his administration remains committed to sustaining collaborations that will enhance the welfare and well-being of all Zamfara people.
