In a significant move to commemorate the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, Thursday inaugurated the official planning committee.

This committee is charged with designing a program that aligns with this year’s theme and will positively impact the lives of persons with disabilities (PWDs) across Nigeria.

The committee’s work aligns with the United Nations-designated IDPD, observed annually on December 3.

This year’s theme, “Transformative Solutions for Inclusive Development: The Role of Innovation in Fuelling an Accessible and Equitable World,” emphasizes the power of innovation in fostering inclusivity and creating a fairer world for PWDs.

Setting the Stage for a Memorable IDPD 2024

Barrister Yusuf Iyodo, who introduced the committee to Hon. Abba Isa, expressed the committee’s commitment to designing an impactful program for the IDPD.

“We have gathered individuals who possess the expertise and passion required to organize a memorable and meaningful event,” Barr. Iyodo stated.

He added that the committee would soon create an action plan and immediately commence work to ensure the IDPD observance achieves its goals.

The committee then elected Mr. Remigius Nwaonu as its chairman, a role he accepted with a commitment to ensuring the day’s success.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Nwaonu promised that his team will work tirelessly to execute a program that touches lives and reflects positively on the administration’s commitment to the welfare of PWDs.

“We understand the stakes and the expectations tied to this project, and we are ready to deliver,” he said.

SSA Abba Isa Outlines Committee Goals

While declaring the committee inaugurated, Hon. Abba Isa expressed appreciation for the committee members’ dedication, noting that the purpose of IDPD is to raise awareness on disability-related issues and to seek solutions by engaging stakeholders.

The Senior presidential aide urged the committee to bring their experiences to bear in executing a program aligned with the IDPD’s objectives.

“The terms of reference are clear, and I expect you to identify and work with relevant partners to ensure this event is impactful. With the caliber of expertise in this committee, I have every confidence that you will achieve these goals and contribute to a stronger, more inclusive society for all,” the SSAP stated.

A Call to Action for Innovation and Inclusivity

In a statement that underscored the importance of inclusivity in the planning process, Mr. Paul Ihekwoaba, one of the committee members, called for the addition of female representation within the group.

Emphasizing collaboration, he encouraged the team to share ideas freely and work diligently to accomplish their goals.

“To whom much is given, much is expected, this committee should commit day and night to ensure the program’s success. Let’s work together, cross-fertilize ideas, and ensure everyone’s input is valued,” he remarked.

The IDPD, observed globally, seeks to promote awareness, dignity, and the full participation of persons with disabilities.

This year’s event aims to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and foster opportunities that allow people with disabilities to thrive and contribute fully to society.

The committee’s inauguration marks the beginning of a collaborative effort that will mobilize resources, expertise, and innovations to highlight the potential of inclusive development in Nigeria.
