Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, has extended warm congratulations to Dr. Kole Shettima, Nigeria and Africa Director of the MacArthur Foundation, on the conferment of an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the Federal University of Kashere (FUK), Gombe State.
In a goodwill message released shortly after the ceremony on Saturday, July 5, 2025, Hon. Abba Isa, himself a distinguished indigene of Yobe State like Dr. Shettima, described the award as a well-deserved recognition of an illustrious son of the state whose contributions to national development and humanitarian service continue to inspire.
“Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with you, learning from you, and witnessing firsthand your strength, honesty, humility, and vast intellect,” Hon. Abba Isa said. “May Allah continue to bless and support all your endeavors that have brought you this far.”
Hon. Abba Isa particularly praised Dr. Shettima’s tireless efforts in advancing the rights and welfare of Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations, especially Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). Through his leadership at the MacArthur Foundation, Dr. Shettima has spearheaded initiatives that promote inclusion, equity, and access to opportunities for marginalized groups.
“All of the 35.1 million Nigerians with disabilities are proud of your accomplishments and contributions,” the SSA to the President declared, noting that Dr. Shettima’s commitment to social justice and good governance has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s development landscape.
The honorary doctorate was conferred during the university’s convocation ceremony, which drew an array of dignitaries from across the country. Gombe State Governor, His Excellency Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, served as Special Guest of Honor. The ceremony was also graced by members of the National Assembly, federal ministers, and top-ranking government officials.
Representing Yobe State were a high-powered delegation that included the Honorable Commissioner of Finance, Alhaji Muhammad Abacha Geidam; Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Bello Kawuwa; Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Assoc. Prof. Abba Idris Adam; and Barr. Baba Dala, SAN, Special Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni on Judicial Matters.
Dr. Shettima’s conferment adds to a growing list of accolades in recognition of his leadership, integrity, and unwavering dedication to strengthening democratic institutions, championing human rights, and uplifting underserved communities across Nigeria and Africa.
