The Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Dr. Betta Edu, has commended the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, for his impact in the community of Persons With Disabilities and his ability to galvanise support for PWDs across the country.

The Minister also praised the SSA for his proactiveness in engaging with critical stakeholders that will make significant difference in the lives of PWDs.

Dr. Edu gave the commendation Monday at an event marking the 70th anniversary of Sightsavers in Abuja.

Sightsavers is a Non Governmental Organization which has dedicated 70 years of its existence to protecting sight and fighting for disablity rights in Nigeria.

In her remarks, the Minister, who was a Special Guest of Honour at the event, congratulated and applauded the NGO for its various intervention programs that has resulted in saving the sight of thousands of Nigerians.

Dr. Edu urged Sightsavers not to rest on their oars having reach a milestone of 70 years but to raise the bar and set a new target for themselves by engaging in more intervention programs.

” I have learnt about thousands of surgeries that have been done by Sightsavers to save sights, I have listened to various interventions that Sightsavers have actually implemented in Nigeria.

I felt the impact of Sightsavers in Cross Rivers State when I was Commissioner and D.G of Primary Healthcare. I thank you for the sacrifices, thank you to all those who have been on the fields in different States affecting lives positively.

“Remember that eyes are windows to life and so many things. You can only but imagine the joy the gratitude in the face of people whom you have saved their sights.

“After 70 years, I challenge you to raise the bar, intervene more,” the Minister said.
