In preparation for the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, has urged stakeholders in Nigeria’s disability community to reaffirm their dedication to fostering an inclusive and sustainable society.

Speaking as a Special Guest at the One-Day Conference of Stakeholders on Disability Inclusion in Nigeria (COSDIN), organized by the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), the presidential aide emphasized the need to celebrate diversity and ensure that no one is left behind.

Highlighting the 2024 IDPD theme, ”Amplifying the Leadership of Persons With Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future in Nigeria,”* Hon. Abba Isa noted its alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration.

“This theme is a call to action, urging every stakeholder to embrace the leadership potential within the disability community as we work toward a more equitable society,” he stated.

The SSAP announced a two-day program designed to commemorate this year’s IDPD and further the administration’s commitment to disability inclusion:

1. Awareness Walk and Rally: Scheduled for Monday, December 2, 2024, this event will begin at Unity Fountain and end at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja. The walk symbolizes a collective effort to dismantle barriers and promote greater awareness of the rights and contributions of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

2. Advocacy Symposium and Empowerment Program: To be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at the State House Auditorium, Abuja, the symposium will bring together governors, ministers, policymakers, and advocates. Discussions will focus on enhancing inclusivity, accessibility, and empowerment for PWDs, while also celebrating the achievements and contributions of the community.

The SSAP called for a united front to address systemic challenges impeding PWDs’ full participation in society. “Collaboration and unity of purpose among advocates and leaders are essential to achieving sustainable progress,” he said.

Championing Inclusive Leadership

Hon. Abba Isa emphasized the critical role of inclusive leadership in national development. He highlighted the untapped leadership potential within the disability community and called for the dismantling of physical, attitudinal, and systemic barriers that perpetuate discrimination.

“Leadership is a cornerstone of societal transformation. Amplifying the voices of PWDs in governance, education, and business is not a favor—it is a necessity,” he asserted. He urged stakeholders to recognize the unique insights and resilience of PWDs, which could contribute to addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

Acknowledging Key Partners

The SSAP commended the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) for organizing the event and the House Committee on Disability Matters for its technical partnership. He specifically lauded the committee’s chairman, Hon. Dr. Bashir Dawodu, for his unwavering commitment to advancing legislative efforts for disability inclusion.

“Your steadfast advocacy inspires meaningful progress, ensuring that no Nigerian, regardless of ability, is left behind,” Abba Isa remarked.

A Collective Call to Action

In his closing remarks, the SSAP called for a renewed commitment to inclusivity. “The journey toward an inclusive Nigeria is collective. Let this year’s IDPD ignite a renewed commitment to creating a nation that not only accommodates but celebrates diversity. Together, we can build a future where every Nigerian, regardless of ability, thrives and contributes meaningfully to national development,” he concluded.

The conference serves as a precursor to the 2024 IDPD, set to inspire transformative actions that amplify the leadership and potential of PWDs across Nigeria.
